A new initiative looking into the literature on the situation of the family in the Arab world was launched in April 2013 by the Doha International Family Institute and the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy & International Affairs at the American University of Beirut. The project is designed to explore and analyze available knowledge on family in the Arab world generated both in the Arab World and from outside the region.

The project includes the production of a comprehensive literature review of available scholarly and technical knowledge including academic and non-academic resources in three languages: English, French and Arabic. Following the review of existing resources, a preliminary analysis will be conducted to identify key knowledge gaps and other areas that are well-documented.

The initiative also includes a regional experts meeting discussing research on family in the Arab world. The meeting will take place in Beirut and will include academics and experts from different disciplines and backgrounds. The 1-day meeting is designed to look into the current state of knowledge produced on the family in the Arab world, starting with the trends in defining the family and studying the family in local, regional and international contexts. Participants will discuss the preliminary results of the literature review and will look into current knowledge gaps with the aim of broadly defining future research priorities.

This project will be valuable to researchers of family studies as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations focusing on family or population policies and programs This initiative is the beginning of a longer collaboration between the two institutes to bring resources together for the study of the family in the Arab world.
